“But the One on the Right” by Dorothy Parker is an excellent example of Parker’s continual commentary on society (simple). Like many of Parker’s short stories and poems, “But the One on the Right” spotlights an examination of the position a particular woman holds in society and the morés her position in society dictates she follow (compound). The speaker in this short story is polite to the boring companion on her left while in her mind she mocks his small talk (compound). Her goal is not to gain entertainment from the man on her left but to attract the man on her right (compound). The only reason she will not ignore the man on her left is that she seeks the continued approval of her hostess (complex). This makes being honest about her feelings rather difficult and so she lies to gain her escape (compound).
