Advanced Placement English Literature and Composition

Prerequisites:

Superb under pressure writing skill, recommendation of the junior year English teacher, completion of the summer readings and continued maintenance of 85% average in English 12 AP.

Course Description:This course focuses on world literature with special emphasis on 20th century writers. Analysis of poetry and the short essay (point of view, tone, literary devices to enhance meaning) receive heavy emphasis since they are tested on the AP exam. Timed writing as opposed to more reflective (frequently revised) writing is reinforced throughout the course. Short research papers are assigned to review research skills. Oral presentation skills using A-V aids are a critical component of the year culminating in the Senior Exhibition at the end of the year when all seniors present their research project to a panel of community members/faculty.

Exam/Homework Policy:
* Missed quizzes/unit tests following a legal absence must be rescheduled the day your return -- usually for that day.
* All assigned projects or papers are due on a specific day, so there is an expectations that work will be completed by the due date.

Grading Policy:
Quarterly grades are based upon:
* Writing: 40 %
* Test Debate/Test Analysis: 40%
* Class Discussion Journals / Blogs: 20%
* Seniors’ exit outcome oral presentation and journal at the end of the course is valued at 20% of the final grade for the year.

Extra help days and location:
Tuesday and Wednesday (2:15 - 3:00) or by appointment in room W-22.
